Roads at the beginning of the century were rough and narrow, thick with mud or dust-through the choking clouds left by other cars on the road to Bordeaux, Gabriel passed 80 other drivers. Animals still unaccustomed to the horseless carriage were a constant hazard, as were crowds of uncontrolled and undisciplined spectators, still more familiar with the speeds of horse drawn vehicles,” wrote Giovanni Lurani in his book, HISTORY OF THE RACING CAR. Gabriel was pronounced the winner of the 1903 race which was stopped early at Bordeaux by the French government after public alarm over many deaths and accidents which occurred during the first half of the event. Over the 342 mile run, Gabriel averaged 65.3 mph. Price: $14,000,000
